Iowa’s five-season CFP contract reaches 57% as 24-team playoff plan nears
The Kalshi price rose despite a Minnesota loss, reflecting a multiyear wager whose value depends heavily on an expansion that remains unfinished.
Iowa’s Kalshi contract on making the College Football Playoff at least once during its five-season window was priced at a 57% implied probability for YES on Oct. 25, after gaining nine percentage points in 24 hours. The contract, listed as KXNCAAFTFUT-30IOWA, is a long-dated proposition rather than a wager on Iowa’s 2026 postseason prospects alone.
A YES share cost 57 cents and would pay $1 if Iowa qualified during the window, before fees; NO cost 43 cents. The pricing implies that traders see a better-than-even chance of one appearance across several attempts. As a mathematical illustration, a 15% chance in each of five seasons would produce roughly a 56% chance of qualifying at least once.
The contract’s activity accelerated even as Iowa’s immediate outlook worsened. About 36% of its all-time trading volume occurred on the day the Hawkeyes lost 13-10 at Minnesota, leaving them 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Minnesota won on Luke Drzewiecki’s 46-yard field goal as time expired after Iowa had committed four turnovers, including three interceptions, and allowed a blocked punt.
Iowa’s 2026-only playoff outlook was materially lower than the multiseason contract price. Nine predictive models cited in the original report put the Hawkeyes’ chance of qualifying this season at 17%, while a separate 2026-season Kalshi contract had an 18/20 bid-ask after earlier trading around 16% to 24%.
The main long-term consideration is the reported move toward a 24-team playoff beginning in 2027. Four of the contract’s five seasons would fall after that proposed change, if it takes effect on schedule. The original report attributed the positive repricing to both expansion reporting and the surge in trading activity, rather than to one factor alone.
The playoff remains a proposal, however. The Athletic reported on Oct. 15 that an ESPN agreement was 95% complete and would add more than $300 million a year in payments, while Yahoo Sports reported that the field was expected to stay at 24 teams from 2027 through 2031. CBS Sports separately reported that a 2027 launch was not assured, with 2028 the earliest alternative if logistics were not completed.
The reported formats have not been fully consistent. CBS described a field composed of the top 23 teams in the final selection-committee rankings plus the highest-ranked Group of Six team. The Athletic described four guaranteed Power 4 places, one guaranteed Group of 6 place and 19 at-large berths. Both accounts said the proposal would end conference championship games and give the top eight seeds byes.
That uncertainty matters directly to the contract. A one-year delay would remove one projected post-expansion season from its five-season window, reducing the value of YES positions. The CFP faces a Dec. 1 deadline for format changes to apply to the 2027-28 season.
