Los Angeles bar group used Kalshi trade to cushion Dodgers playoff loss

A $60,000 position paid out when the Dodgers missed the World Series, illustrating prediction markets’ emerging use as a business hedge.

A Los Angeles hospitality group that operates 25 bars, many near Dodger Stadium, used a $60,000 Kalshi trade to cushion the loss of playoff-related business after the Dodgers failed to reach the World Series.

The position was contingent on the Dodgers not advancing to the World Series and returned nearly twice its original stake. Kalshi said the proceeds helped replace revenue the bars would have taken in from additional postseason games.

The trade was reported by Sports Business Journal as an example of businesses using prediction markets to protect against event-specific risks for which conventional financial products may offer little coverage.

That approach has become a part of Kalshi's pitch to small businesses. The New York-based platform, launched in 2021, allows users to trade contracts tied to sports, elections, weather, government policy and other events. More than 200 businesses used Kalshi for hedging in one month cited by the company, with particular interest in weather and gasoline-price exposure.

Brenden Theaters, a Las Vegas-based regional cinema chain with seven locations in four states, requested a market tied to the number of films released each quarter. Its contract pays if fewer than 60 films are released, a result that would coincide with weaker box-office supply; if more than 60 are released, the company expects stronger ticket revenue to offset losses on the contract. The chain allocated $1,000 to Kalshi trading in its latest quarter.

Other examples include a Los Angeles ice cream shop that trades contracts on whether temperatures fall below specified levels, receiving payouts that can compensate for weaker cold-weather foot traffic. A New York City bar also used the platform during the NBA Finals as part of a promotion.

Supporters say such contracts can make cash flow less risky and more predictable. Ian Appel of the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business said prediction markets may fill gaps where businesses cannot otherwise hedge a risk.

Benjamin Schiffrin of Better Markets said sports event contracts are generally not hedges against economic risk and described hedging as a sideline to Kalshi's core business of attracting customers to trade event outcomes. Research from Citizens found a median loss of 8% for prediction-market users from July 2025 through March 2026, compared with a median loss of 5% for sports bettors in the legal US market.

The Dodgers separately announced a multiyear arrangement with Kalshi, making it the club's official and exclusive prediction-market partner. The deal includes stadium signage, the renaming of the Gold Glove Bar as the Kalshi 435 Club, Dodgers-specific app offers and activations at Centerfield Plaza.
